This soft and easily processable wood, also called tulip wood, can be identified by its yellow-green to brown-green colour.

Origin and quality

Yellow poplar is very easy to process and competitively priced, and is therefore widely used in the furniture and staircase industries. It belongs to the Magnoliaceae family with its origins in North America. They are large trees that can grow up to 50 metres with a diameter of 2 metres.

Durability class

The durability of a type of wood is determined by a durability class. There are five classes for the natural durability of the core wood against moulds and the like. In the table below these are explained (according to NEN-EN-350-2).

Indication of life span in years
1 Very durable > 25
2 Durable 15-25
3 Moderately durable 10-15
4 Not very durable 5-10
5 Not durable < 5
40 % Durability class 4 (Life span: 5-10 years)
80 % Processing
80 % Applicability

Features and applications

Yellow Poplar has a fine structure. With increased humidity, it tends to absorb moisture again, even if it is dried. The wood does not work so much. The processing of yellow poplar is easy. It is therefore often used for light construction work, kitchen cabinets, panels and doors.
